Mining Your Own (Personal Mastery) Business

It’s not very often that I get a platform to share about my personal interests. And it might feel a little bit weird, especially when my interest looks something like this gemstone collection.

So I don’t just collect gems, I also collect rough facetble specimens. Some people will say, Why do you collect? Well, I started off this interest because for some time, I was quite interested in slightly more esoteric psychology, you’ve probably heard that all certain kinds of gemstones are good for certain kinds of chakra points. And I studied some of that was actually interested in the area of energy healing. And I know a lot of people, especially the the very, so called logical individuals are not open to such exploration. And in my opinion, I think as Asians, we are inherently interested in some of these. And for some strange reason, it has perpetuated over 1000s of years, that, you know, the nature of the moon cycle has got some astrological effect, and so on and so forth. Now, I’m not going to get into astrology, because I don’t know enough about astrology to be able to see whether it works or doesn’t. In my opinion, I think things like specimens, I’ve got a nice black spinel, it’s very hard to find solid black spinel like this, in Singapore is hard to find any of these. We’ve got a black kyanite here, I love stones like these, they’ve got such a nice structure.

You know, as far as I’m concerned, it appeals to me primarily from an aesthetic perspective. But because there’s so much to say about it, I had to explore it, because people will ask me questions about it. So what do I believe about gemstones? Do they heal you? Do they create whatever inside of you. And I think we are at a border of science where we cannot tell whether something like an aquamarine actually resonates with the frequency of your chakras, I don’t think we have the equipment to do that. Not as if someone had this bright idea to go like, I think the market valuation of a business like this would be really cool. So let’s go build a machine that can measure resonance of your chakra energies with an aquamarine, right, that’ll be real seller. I don’t think anyone’s done that. In fact, people buy it in spite of the fact that they know there’s no scientific proof for it. Because deep inside of them, they already hold a belief that, that when they’re resonating with a certain energy, that it plays a role somehow. And maybe it’s the ritual, maybe it is the stone, or maybe it’s the person explaining it.

But whatever the case, it is probably, in my opinion, one of the pathways to activate the placebo effect. Now, we all know the placebo effect as one thing, right. But actually, it seems like that more than one pathway to the placebo effect, I’m not an expert in everything placebo. So I’d like to just give a quick anecdote about how the placebo effect works. And then we can move on. The idea is when you take a pill, and it’s a sugar pill, but it’s coming from an authority figure, this pill is more likely probably about 55% of the time and above, likely to create the effect that was described. Alright, so if you said that this pill was going to cause you to lose weight, and you lose weight, it’s due to the placebo effect, because they know that that pill does not contain anything else other than an empty, you know, capsule, for example, or, you know, some people call it a sugar pill. I don’t think it’s just sugar, because if they gave you sugar, only, you probably will get fat. So one of the characteristics of caffeine, for example, I’m drinking coffee this morning. And one of the characteristics of caffeine is that it’s supposed to kind of like wake up your body, but then there are some people who don’t get affected by it. Right. And some of these people have this belief that Oh, I’ve already drunk so much caffeine that it has no effect on me. What does that say? It means that the caffeine that’s supposed to kind of like poke you up, wake you up, and so on, isn’t really doing its job anymore. Because you’ve kind of like shut down the receptors, right? You don’t you no longer believe that it works the same way as it used to. Right. So this is why we need to understand the placebo effect a little bit more discrimination is based on a placebo effect. Because if I keep thinking that you are useless, you’re useless. And I hold that label against you. And sure, you’re gonna be like that. I believe that to remove the mystery right now the most plausible theory is the placebo effect, taking something like this.

I mean, come on, you get a nice ring from your partner, right? For example, this is a nice red wine Garnet ring. I liked it. So I wear this, you know, this is my so called reality stone. Okay, it’s fun, is it’s nice to have and it has got a certain feel to it. Right? Are we sure that these are things that don’t impact? I mean, you look at the studies in the area of enclothed cognition. Enclothed cognition is a concept where an object that that you hold on to or something that you were actually makes you feel better makes you enact certain characteristics. The funny thing is, Batman was A favorite hero to a group of kids. And they took that group of kids and divided them into two groups, one that was wearing a Batman outfit, and those that were just in that normal plain clothes. And they were told to solve a problem that does experiment this new way too tough for them to cover. And eventually what happened was those who persevered for longer periods of time, where those were actually dressed in a Batman outfit. So in a sense, the clothing had an effect on identity. And that’s something that you need to think about. In neuro linguistic programming, we have the ability to self like imbue those kinds of characteristics utilizing a strategy known as the circle of excellence. It’s a modified new behavior generator. So those strategies are real indeed. Okay. So having said that, there are different pathways for us to explain why gemstones have such a fancy, but why do I have such a fancy to it?

Well, first of all, because I told you, it’s aesthetic in nature, you know, I remember tried to buy Jade, and I got cheated, was done with me, because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. So that revealed to me a certain kind of buying decision strategy, which was ineffective in the first place. Then later on, I went to study gemstones, I would model after people who knew about gemstones, I registered for various gem societies bought the necessary equipment for me to cut to meet for me to understand what it meant to turn this rough stone into something like this. As I went through this experience, I spent some time doing my reflection, and I knew that it was a little bit more significant than I thought, initially, one of the most expensive stones that I’ve ever got myself is this very beautiful, rubellite Tourmaline. at retail, it probably fetch a price of between $12,000 to $15,000 is a really huge one. But it’s also off that kind of color that is really prized. And one of the interesting things is how do all these stones get cut in the first place? How does something like this turn into a facet stone. And of course, in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, there is a concept known as facets of personality. And I thought that was a very nice analogy. So of course, it began to cross reference, I was cheated, I went to learn about it, I close the gap. And now I no longer get cheated. I can focus on the characteristics of different stones.

Now I have to distinguish between stones that are synthetic, versus those that are real. And by combining mind knowledge and understanding of different equipment, different pieces of all of these things, there are two ways to view human behavior. And suddenly, there’s this jump from gemstones to human behavior, yes, because if facets are an analogy of the different parts of us, then maybe it’s a very useful metaphor. So I believe that we undergo a lot of pressure and suffering for a reason. And this reason is that all of the elements of what we know and what we experience are the building blocks of something called wisdom. So when you have different elements that are put under pressure, they coalesce, and they form something along the lines of a gem.

That’s why people call it gems of wisdom, right, they don’t call it gems of ideas or gems of knowledge, these gems are usually buried very, very deep. And when you take a look at the parallels in the real world, that’s exactly where you find gems really, really deep in the ground, you don’t find like very precious gemstones just sticking out like a plant. So you’ve got to dig really deep. And these memories these experiences are gemstones that you’re extracting from yourself, you are in a sense, the mind that needs to be mined, you need to dig really deep. And to dig safely, you need to have the right equipment, which is one of the reasons why I love neuro linguistic programming. Next you need to put in the effort, you need to put in a time in order to dig. And at the same time avoid issues such as safety, right? Because there are some people as they’re digging, they get into such a negative space, because they’re raking up a lot of bad feelings of the past. So we’re just one of the reasons why I suggest that you don’t do mining on your own right, get a team, you know, get a mentor, get a coach. If you’re in a tight spot, you can get extricated very easily. Then you’re going to extract the gem rough, the moment you extract a gem, you get rid of the thing that’s not supposed to belong there. You figure out what is inside of you. You extract it, you cut it, you polish it, does it mean that you’re a diamond in the rough? And the answer is no, I don’t think you are a diamond in the rough. I think you have experiences that add up to you producing diamonds that’s even better. Right? So there’s some things in your experience that are so valuable that they form up into diamonds and you need to not extract them and polish them of course, but then you may not have diamonds you may only have quartz, there are some people who love quartz. So you extract that quartz and then you can still fasten it It still has an interesting value. All you You can just keep it in a specimen form and is just as beautiful.

So the reason why I need you to understand that is that not everything is a diamond. And even then not all diamonds are more valuable than other stones. So the reason why I’m mentioning this is because we are talking about quality rather than quantity. Right? So are you aiming for better quality? Are you able to identify the quality of the value that you’re providing, rather than just the quantity of the value that you’re providing? So if I’m not a diamond doesn’t make me feel bad? No, I’m just waiting for the moment where my mind produces the right kinds of gemstones. So it’s not about you, it’s about the things inside of you. And again, if you don’t have more of those things, what do you do, you create experiences that can give you more of those things, you stretch beyond your comfort zone. Now you need to make sure that you cover the gaps. Because you’ve dug into the mind, it can be a danger. So you need to constantly cover up for safety, right so that it becomes not an environmental hazard.

So this is what I call processing, you process your emotions, you process your experiences, you extract the gemstones, and then you bring everything to closure. And in my opinion, closure is a very, very powerful experience. It gets you settled, it gets you into a safe and calm space ready to take on challenges subsequently sort of part of a healing process as well. Enjoy this metaphor.
